After a months voting over Twitter, Facebook, by email and in the clubhouse, the central defensive positions have been selected by supporters for the Greatest Ever New Mills AFC team.
Already selected are Liam Higginbotham in goal and Mike Barton, and Adam Mather as full backs. Taking the first central defensive position in the side is Mickey Ryan;
Mickey was one of Tony Hancock’s first signings following his arrival at Church Lane, joining from Woodley Sports and he quickly became a huge fans favourite. A former representative of Stockport Schools he had been on the books of Manchester United for many years, playing alongside a number of players who went on to gain international honours. Ryan possessed the ability to play in every outfield position and did so, but it was in central defence where he really shone whilst in an amber jersey. Mickey enjoyed several seasons at Church Lane before moving on to focus on local football. He is still spoken of fondly by Church Lane regulars and his character was appreaciated every bit as much as his footballing ability at the club.
