Probably the hardest thing the Millers supporters will find this season during our voting is to select just two strikers for the Best Ever X1. These are just a few of the candidates, and there were many others who could have been considered.
Because of this we will feature a different striker from the past in every match-day programme next season. In all there will be at least 25.
JOHN JEPSON
John Jepson was born in Stockport in 1899 and joined the club in around 1919. He soon became a fans favourite and bagged plenty of goals. He hit over 80 in two seasons and was snapped up by Notts County in 1924. He later played for Carlisle and Accrington Stanley scoring around 65 goals for each club.
NEVILLE HOLDGATE
New Mills man who in several spells at Church Lane scored bags of goals. His record of 61 in season 1937/8 was incredible. There are a couple of reports missing from that campaign so he may have even scored more.
BILL STANSFIELD
A local man he first played for the club as a 14 year old and quickly established himself in the first team. He scored plenty of goals with his best ever season 1947/8 when he hit 53 – the second player to go past a half a century in a season.
GEORGE WILD
Yet another New Mills born player who lived on Hall Street. George like Bill Stansfield was offered trials at Liverpool and ironically both men decided that football was not a secure living in those days and opted to stay in regular employment instead. A skilful player who often would tease the opposition before putting the ball into the back of the net.
DEREK OLDHAM
Derek joined from Miles Platting in 1954 and enjoyed two spells with the Millers. He scored almost 100 goals for the club. Derek blazed over 35 goals to help the club clinch their first league title in 30 years in 1956.
DAVE McGUINNESS
The local school teacher in Disley Dave was the first man to score over 200 goals for the club. He bagged 44 in his first season and became the first player to score 30 or more goals in 5 consecutive seasons. He later went on to be more of a provider of goals rather than the out and out striker.
ALAN DODGSON
“Doddy” is still talked about today about his bravery and ability to score lots of goals. He also scored over 200 goals during a spell of 8 ½ years at Church Lane. His partnership with Welsh is still talked about fondly today.
BARRY WELSH
“Bazza” is arguably the king of all the strikers the club have had during their history. He joined the club after the start of the 1964/5 season had started and immediately found the back of the net on a more than regular basis. He hit over 50 goals in each of his first two seasons at the club and then in 1966/67 he equalled the club record of Holdgate’s with 61 league and cup goals. In all during his time at Church Lane he notched up a club record of 29 hat tricks in a tally of some 233 goals – all in just 6 seasons!
LEE JOYCE
Lee the Stockport Fireman joined the clubs reserve side in the early 1970’s and quickly gained a reputation for goal scoring. When John McCullough took over from Joe Martin he was promoted into the first team where he finished top scorer in each of his 3 seasons there. During 1973/4 he scored 37 goals, and it was his goals which took us through to the Senior Cup Final in 1977.
ANDY GREENWOOD
Greenwood was on the books of Manchester United as a junior and was a formidable front man in the successful Millers sides of the mid-late 1980's. A good all round striker with a fiery temperament, Greenwood was hugely popular with the clubs supporters during his time at Church Lane.
STEPHEN DONE
More of a 'number 10' than an out and out centre forward, Done represented the club for a number of years from the 1990's and into the 2000's. A key member of the squad that won back to back Derbyshire Cups under the management of Alan Peatfied, Done enjoyed great success at Manchester League level. Sadly for him injuries took their toll before the club joined the NWCFL and he was never able to test his abilities at that level, seeing out his playing days in the reserves.
DEAN MORGAN
Undoubtedly one of the finest (and most popular) characters to represent the club, Morgan featured in a number of positions for the club, and with spells at other local sides, before establishing himself in the first team in the centre forward role. His finest moments for the club came in the 2001/02 season when he forced his way into the side and was in the team that lifted the Derbyshire Cup, defeating Whaley Bridge 2-0 at The Silverlands. The following season Morgan showed that he could be a goal creator as well as a goal scorer, lining up alongside recent signing Wes Gibbons as the new boy broke the club record for scoring in consecutive games. Gibbons credits Morgan for his role in many of those goals due to his unselfish play.
GARRY KHARAS
Few players have been more popular in recent times than Garry Kharas. The Millers managed to secure him ahead of many close rivals and he scored goals from the very first game. In all he scored 65 goals for the club and when he did return back to the Hillmen, the Millers even picked up a fee for him. A terrific header of the ball as demonstrated in an FA Vase thrashing of Wolverhampton Casuals where he grabbed a hat trick.
MATT SMITH
Gargantuan striker Smith was brought to the club by Tony Hancock and after a slow start to his Church Lane career burst into life in the latter half of the 2008/09 season, becoming a key player in the team as the club went on a record breaking run of victories. Sadly the club missed out on promotion, pipped on the final day by AFC Fylde, but Smith's career did not end there. He has since moved on to the Football League, representing Oldham Athletic and Fulham, and he currently plays for QPR in the EFL Championship.
As usual the voting will be conducted on Social Media, in the clubhouse and via email nmafcprog@gmail.com The polls will run for the next 7 days, with the selections confirmed following the Chadderton home game.
