The Millers 2-1 Winterton Rangers

The Ten Man Millers scraped through to the First Round of the FA Vase, where they will face Cheadle Town, defeating Winterton Rangers at Church Lane in a hard fought contest. With Benito Lowe suspended Joint Managers Dave Birch and Mike Norton made changes to their side, altering system and shuffling their playing pack. Adam Muir moved to right back, with Sam Fitzgerald moving into central defence alongside Harry Norris, skipper Mason Fallon in his usual left back slot, Jack Wray made his first start on the right of midfield and new signing Gary Gee slotted in in central midfield. After an impressive cameo from the substitutes bench last time out Sam Amankwaa lined up in attack alongside Michael Connor.

The visitors started strongly and they took the lead on seven minutes Lee Ridley heading home unmarked from six yards out after a left wing corner, and for the opening half hour they pegged The Millers back to their 18 yard line. The home side gradually battled back into the contest and levelled the score as half-time approached. Sam Amankwaa raced onto a through ball and although Nathan Popple saved his first effort he made no mistake with the rebound, tucking into the empty net.

The Millers began the second period with real purpose and just three minutes in went ahead, Michael Connor was taken to ground by a clumsy challenge and the referee pointed to the spot. Connor picked himself up and, in spite of the Winterton players attempting to delay the kick and put him off his stride, he made no mistake sending Popple the wrong way from the spot.

Adam Muir was dismissed with ten minutes to go, receiving a second yellow card, which ensured a nervy end to the game for the home side, but they defended stoutly to repel the visitors attacks and earn a place in the next round.
